30 Years of Painting
On view at HMC from Saturday May 9th, 2026 until Saturday June 6th, 2026 you can find 30 years worth of paintings by the Montreal-born artist Louis Jaque.
From Aurora Borealis to White Silence presents over ten previously unexhibited paintings by Louis Jaque, soon to be on view at the gallery for the first time. Spanning from the mid-1960s, when the artist gained national recognition, to the early 1990s, the exhibition traces an arc in Jaque’s career. Over these decades, his work evolved alongside his growing international presence, ultimately securing his place not only within Quebec’s art history, but within the broader language of abstract painting.

May 9th presentation 👀
Monique Brunet-Weinmann discusses her encounter with Louis Jaque, first with the painter’s oeuvre in 1977, then with the artist himself, leading to several articles on his work. He is the subject of her first book on the visual arts, published in 1989 by Marcel Broquet (Collection Signatures).
Monique Brunet-Weinmann 📖
MBW has engaged with art criticism as a literary genre for many years, culminating recently with her in-depth study of Jean-Paul Riopelle in Search of his Myth, published by Del Busso in Montreal (2023), and reprinted in France by Balzac Éditeurs (2024) under the title Riopelle sur le vif. MBW’s original approach, as a poet, stems from her focus on the creative source of both artistic expressions: poetry and the visual arts.
The author will be signing her books, exceptionally for sale tax-free at the Gallery.
