Jaume Plensa, born 1955 in Barcelona, Spain works fluidly throughout mediums - mainly drawing, etching, sculpture and theater. Well known for his monumental and thought provoking public installations which depict larger-than life forms of humans. His works involve the complete entirety from the viewer, asking them to move with the work and explore all the nuances. Moving from large scale sculptures which define space, to drawing and etchings on paper which demand intimacy, Plensa’s works are methodical and philosophical. Often times using text and objects on paper to convey his idea, they ask of us to disregard language at its face value and to search deeper within, or on, the paper to discover more. All of Plensa’s works have something in common, and that is that they are philosophical and question our society in a contemporary world. They ask of the viewer to consider their positionality and mindset when interacting with the pieces. “Art should be an echo, a feeling of your heart, a mirror, a container of memory.” - Jaume Plensa
