Hans Bellmer

Hans Bellmer was a German photographer, sculptor, printmaker, painter, and writer. His controversial practice, labelled as “degenerated art” in 1938, questioned the artistic rules and standards of beauty imposed by the Nazi government. In that same year, Bellmer fled to Paris and started to collaborate with the French Surrealists. Bellmer began to produce prints, photographs, and drawings, still dealing with themes of abject sexuality and forbidden desire.
